Post-menopause

Post-menopause refers to the period after a woman has gone through menopause, when menstrual cycles have stopped after 12 consecutive months. While many symptoms from the earlier stages of perimenopause and menopause may lessen or disappear, some women continue to experience changes and new symptoms. Symptoms can vary in severity and duration and may require ongoing management to improve quality of life.

Hot flushes

These may continue or appear less frequently after menopause.

Night sweats

Similar to hot flushes, these can persist, affecting sleep quality.

Vaginal dryness

A common issue due to decreased oestrogen levels, which can cause discomfort during intercourse.

Decreased libido

Continued hormonal shifts can affect sexual desire.

Urinary incontinence

Weakening pelvic muscles may lead to increased urgency or frequency of urination.

Bone density loss

Decreased oestrogen can lead to weakened bones, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

Joint pain & stiffness

Persistent aches and stiffness in joints.

Mood changes

Some women experience feelings of anxiety, irritability, or depression, often due to hormonal fluctuations.

Fatigue

Low energy or tiredness that may persist beyond the menopausal transition.

Memory issues / brain fog

Ongoing difficulty concentrating or recalling information.

Weight gain

Changes in metabolism can contribute to weight gain, particularly around the abdomen.

Sleep disturbances

Difficulty sleeping may persist, particularly due to night sweats or other hormonal shifts.

Heart health concerns

Increased risk of cardiovascular issues as oestrogen levels decline.

Changes in cholesterol levels

A decline in oestrogen can affect cholesterol, leading to higher levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and lower levels of HDL (good cholesterol).

Dry skin

Reduced skin elasticity and moisture, leading to dry and thinning skin.

Pruritus (itching)

Caused by hormonal changes, particularly declining oestrogen levels, which affect skin hydration, elasticity, and barrier function.

Thinning hair

Continued hair thinning or hair loss, which may become more noticeable post-menopause.
