Adelaide fertility acupuncture for IVF support
For many people undergoing assisted reproductive treatment, the IVF journey can feel both physically demanding and emotionally overwhelming. Acupuncture is commonly used alongside fertility treatment as a complementary therapy to support the body during this process.
Research suggests that acupuncture may be a supportive adjunct therapy when used alongside Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), including:
IVF – In Vitro Fertilisation
IUI – Intrauterine Insemination
FET – Frozen Embryo Transfer
OC – Oocyte Cryopreservation / Egg Freezing
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Healthcare analysed 37 randomised controlled trials and found that acupuncture was associated with improved fertility outcomes in ART cycles, including increases in clinical pregnancy and live birth rates.
How Acupuncture May Support IVF and Fertility Treatment
Acupuncture is commonly integrated into fertility care to support both physical readiness and emotional wellbeing during treatment cycles. When timed appropriately, it may assist by:
o Supporting pelvic blood flow circulation during ovarian stimulation
o Helping regulate menstrual cycles before IVF begins
o Reducing stress and promoting nervous system calm
o Supporting implantation conditions around embryo transfer
o Assisting wellbeing during the early weeks of pregnancy
When to Have Acupuncture During an ART Cycle
When possible, acupuncture is often commenced around three months before an IVF or fertility treatment cycle, as this timeframe aligns with the natural development phase of eggs prior to ovulation. Beginning earlier may provide more opportunity to support cycle regulation, overall wellbeing, and preparation before assisted reproductive treatment begins.
Acupuncture can support you at every stage of an ART cycle:
Preconception (Ideally 3+ Months Before IVF)
This phase focuses on preparing the body before treatment begins. Because egg development occurs over approximately 90 days, starting acupuncture several months before IVF may help support cycle regulation and reproductive health before stimulation starts.
Ovarian Stimulation → Egg Retrieval
During stimulation, acupuncture is often used to support circulation and help the body through hormonal changes associated with follicle development and egg collection.
Embryo Transfer Day
Many patients choose acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer to encourage relaxation and create a calm, receptive environment.
Post-Transfer (and during the Two-Week Wait)
This stage can be emotionally intense. Acupuncture may help reduce stress and support nervous system regulation during the implantation window.
Early Pregnancy (Up to 12 Weeks)
For patients who conceive, acupuncture may continue in early pregnancy to support wellbeing during this important transition period.
Research Findings: What the Evidence Shows
According to the 2025 MDPI meta-analysis of 37 RCTs, the data found that acupuncture was associated with higher clinical pregnancy and live birth rates in some ART settings. Individual outcomes vary depending on a range of factors:
o Clinical Pregnancy Rate (CPR): increased by approximately 31%
o Live Birth Rate (LBR): increased by approximately 29%
o Herbal medicine also showed benefit:
- CPR increased by approximately 18%
- LBR increased by approximately 15%
The authors concluded that acupuncture appears to be a beneficial complementary therapy that may improve ART outcomes when integrated appropriately into fertility treatment.
Emotional Support During IVF Matters Too
Beyond physical outcomes, fertility treatment can create significant emotional strain. Previous research has also shown acupuncture may help reduce anxiety in women undergoing infertility treatment, making it valuable not only for reproductive support but also for emotional resilience during IVF.
Is Fertility Acupuncture Right for You?
Every fertility journey is unique. Acupuncture may provide supportive care when incorporated into your fertility specialist’s treatment plan.
If you are preparing for IVF, IUI, embryo transfer, or egg freezing in Adelaide, fertility acupuncture can be tailored to each stage of your ART cycle to support your body throughout treatment.
